Ethan Fox and the Eyes of the Desert Sand by E. L. Seer

“Ethan Fox and the Eyes of the Desert Sand” is the enthralling first installment of the Ethan Fox original series, a saga that combines the wonder of magic with the thrill of adventure. Set on Earth, the story unfolds with 13-year-old Ethan Fox’s life taking an unexpected turn as the sinister Grimleavers attempt to abduct him, plunging him into a hidden world that lies just beyond the bounds of ordinary reality.

Full cover (front and back) of “Ethan Fox and the Eyes of the Desert Sand” book by E.L. Seer in the Ethan Fox Books seriesEthan’s mundane life is forever changed when he meets Hayley, a mysterious girl to whom he feels an inexplicable connection. Their fates intertwine when they are both lured away and wake up in The Residence, the secretive home of the Caretakers. This organization, composed of beings from the four elemental worlds of the Chrysalis—Atlantis, Ceres, Hades, and Zephyr—is dedicated to covertly watching over and nurturing the human race.

Outside The Residence, Ethan and Hayley discover the existence of four mystical portals, gateways connecting Earth to the elemental worlds. However, these portals stand locked and inactive, a consequence of the Creators’ decision following a mass exodus of creatures from the four worlds into Earth. This event has left the portals sealed, and the reasons behind this drastic measure form a critical part of the unfolding mystery.

As the story progresses, characters from each of the four elemental worlds are introduced, each with their own hidden agendas and secrets. These new acquaintances challenge Ethan and Hayley’s understanding of the universe and their place within it. The duo finds themselves in the midst of a complex web of intrigue, where questions lead to more questions, and every answer unveils deeper layers of the grand cosmic puzzle.

In a dramatic culmination of events, Ethan and Hayley realize that they are the keys to unlocking the greatest mystery of all—the true purpose of the portals and their connection to the elemental worlds. Their journey of discovery is fraught with danger, wonder, and the awakening of powers they never knew they had.

“Ethan Fox and the Eyes of the Desert Sand,” the first book in the original series, is a visually stunning, action-packed adventure that promises to captivate its audience. It’s a tale of discovery, friendship, and the eternal battle between light and darkness. This film adaptation is set to be a vivid and engaging experience, inviting its audience to step into a world where the ordinary meets the extraordinary, and where very young heart can find a hero in Ethan Fox.

Kirkus Review

“A teenager stumbles on an intriguing world that may clear up his murky history in this YA fantasy debut.

Manhattanite Ethan Fox relishes a Santa Cruz, California, vacation with his adoptive parents. But a young girl catches his eye—Hayley Ravenwood, who inexplicably can’t remember anything before she first saw him. She’s a lot like Ethan, who suffered an amnesia-causing accident that rendered the first eight years of his life a mystery. At the beach, a large blue rabbit that only Ethan can see lures the pair to a surreal, seemingly timeless place called The Residence. It only gets weirder, as they spy copious creatures, like a 4-inch-tall grumpling that sports the face of a grumpy older man. Ethan just wants to get home, but his showing up at The Residence may not be mere coincidence. He spots a book with a symbol identical to the ones that have always been on his palms and further suspects his parents have intentionally concealed his past. It turns out that he and Hayley, both linked to The Residence, can help combat evil Victor Qruefeldt, who plans to lead a vampire army and conquer the world.

Seer packs a hefty plot into this first installment of a series. There are myriad characters and various discussions about even more players, some of whom readers don’t know and are either missing or dead. In addition, the story gives only a few specifics about certain key points, especially Ethan’s hazy early years, which the sequel may address more fully. But this inventive tale boasts delightfully colorful details, such as comparing a hand to a giant gummy bear’s paw and describing “a car-sized scorpion with spider legs and gecko feet” crawling on a cave wall. At the same time, appropriately terrifying villains coincide with instantly likable characters, such as shape-shifter Irvin, who randomly spews nonsense. The ending, though anticlimactic, deftly sets the stage for the next volume.

A quirky cast headlines this overstuffed but imaginative tale for kids and adults alike.” — October 21, 2021

Kirkus Review

“An apprentice runs into trouble when creatures infest a magical garden he’s tending in this illustrated fantasy chapter book.

Grubner Trowel is ready to take on more responsibility. The “three-foot-tall dwarf” agrees to take care of the local Moongarden while his mentor, Mildred Moongarden, is away on business. All sorts of beautiful, amazing plants grow in this special garden, which is hidden from “the human world.” Unfortunately, there’s a problem on Grubner’s first day as caretaker: an infestation of Ravishers. These pumpkin-sized creatures, who are little more than toothy mouths, gobble up plant life and wipe out a quarter of the garden’s Moon Orchard. Luckily, Mildred’s incredible Moongrow fertilizer grows plants overnight, but that doesn’t make it easy for Grubner to stay ahead of the Ravishers’ ongoing destruction. The alarmingly smart critters do their worst, despite Grubner’s efforts to scare them off, while cackling at his misfortune. Although the prideful Grubner wants to tackle this trouble alone, he reluctantly seeks help, including from his six brothers. Before long, he’s taking locals’ advice, such as hitting the books to learn all he can about the Ravishers. It’s tough work, but now he’s doing it with his friends’ support.

Seer’s book is a spinoff for the author’s series that began with Ethan Fox and the Eyes of the Desert Sand (2021), and it features a handful of that series’ characters. This brisk, enjoyable story, however, stands on its own thanks to its genial, winsome protagonist. Along the way, Grubner mingles with lively secondary players and plants and some that are a bit of both, such as the Trembling Nomads—tiny evergreen trees that raise and shake their “pine-covered arm branches” and smell like fresh rain. There’s also plenty of educational value for younger readers, as Grubner succeeds by studying, asking others for assistance, and building self-confidence. Batra’s black-and-white artwork effectively complements the humor, especially in images of local “handyman” Irvin, whose mannequinlike face features comical, exaggerated expressions when the situation calls for it.

A sprightly, entertaining tale of otherworldly places and characters.” – Kirkus Reviews, November 5, 2021
